Unseen Architecture Part 2: A series of online events exploring architecture, music and acoustics

Musicity and Sto Werkstatt are proud to present ‘Unseen Architecture’, a sequence of two online events this Autumn that explore sound and space from the perspective of architects, designers and musicians.

Part 2: Thursday 1st October 2020, 6:30–8pm (BST)

‘Unseen Architecture’ celebrates the launch of MSCTY EXPO (curated by Nick Luscombe and Clare Farrow) a set of commissioned music pieces and experimental sound art realised in response to the acoustic qualities and concepts of specific unrealised buildings or imagined architectural projects from seven prominent architects. By bringing together architects, musicians and acousticians, these events are an opportunity to consider the creative possibilities of sound at the design stage of architecture, and to explore the links between architecture, music and acoustics.

Hosted by Musicity Expo co-curator and writer Clare Farrow, this second discussion in our series takes it’s starting point in the choreographed movement, time and sound in designer Lily Jencks’ new work, 'The Horizon: your steps are a metronome. 30 minutes, 23 July 2020', and multimedia artist and composer Yuval Avital’s 'Meditations on Daniel Libeskind’s ‘Theatrum Mundi’'. PiM.studio and Arup specialists Ed Elbourne and Ned Crowe also give their perspectives on designing for music and theatre spaces.

More About Our Speakers:

Lily Jencks is an award-winning landscape and architectural designer, co-founder of JencksSquared, with a studio in London. With strong interdisciplinary interests, her work includes Ruin’s Studio, a choreographed live/work/contemplation space in Dumfries, Scotland, and Maggie’s Centre gardens in Hong Kong and Glasgow. For MSCTY EXPO she has collaborated with composer, artist and musician Hannah Peel.

Chisara Agor is an interdisciplinary songwriter, actor and performer, who has written music for theatre, choreographed for film and has been commissioned by organisations such as Spitalfields Music, In-Between Time Summit and MAIA.

Maurizio Mucciola and Maria-Chiara Piccinelli, Founders and Directors of PiM.studio, are best known for their work on Kengo Kuma’s V&A Dundee. Now with a studio in London they pursue a philosophy of “rewilding architecture”, bringing nature into the city. For MSCTY EXPO they have teamed up with composer and sound artist mcconville.

Arup is famous for its global brilliance in engineering and design. Ed Elbourne (Venues, Acoustics and Theatre Lighting) is particularly interested in live performances and the impact of the spaces in which they happen, including theatres worldwide; while Ned Crowe (Acoustics) specialises in buildings for performing arts, recording and broadcast.
