Structural systems often define material selection, but sometimes it is the materials themselves that define a structure. Graham Coult, Technical Director at engineering practice Eckersley O’Callaghan, discusses the thought processes behind material selection and the impact this has on the structures and facades of the buildings that they design.

Graham will explore a range of Eckersley O’Callaghan’s most significant work, including the modular timber system of the new Vitsœ Headquarters in Leamington Spa, UK, 2017, the super-lightweight carbon fibre roof of the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino, USA, 2017, and the practice’s revolutionary work with structural glass, which has been applied to projects all over the world.

A Material Approach is series at Sto Werkstatt which spotlights the relationships between architects and materials. Each edition offers a fascinating insight into the mind of an architect and their creative process – how decisions are made around the specification of materials and how architecture informs and is informed by particular qualities of materials. Sto Werkstatt is an architects’ testing ground for a wide variety of building products and surfaces and the Sto team offer technical and creative support for architectural projects all around the world.
