This evening talk was led by Mat Cash, Group Leader at Heatherwick Studio. Through the lens of materiality, an integral part of the studio’s work and design process, Mat spoke about the studio’s commitment to finding innovative design solutions, with a dedication to artistic thinking and the latent potential of materials and craftsmanship.
Mat also expanded on Zeitz MOCAA (which will open to the public in September 2017), a reinvention of a historic grain silo in Cape Town into a not-for-profit cultural institution which will house the most significant collection of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. He discussed the studio’s engagement with this historic structure as well as some of the many challenges in repurposing this derelict building.
A Material Approach is series at Sto Werkstatt which spotlights the relationships between architects and materials. Each edition offers a fascinating insight into the mind of an architect and their creative process – how decisions are made around the specification of materials and how architecture informs and is informed by particular qualities of materials. Sto Werkstatt is an architects’ testing ground for a wide variety of building products and surfaces and the Sto team offer technical and creative support for architectural projects all around the world..
